Artist Statement:
I always knew my path in life would lead me to a career as an artist. Not that I was born with “natural artistic” talents; I just knew it was going to be my chosen profession despite limitations and insufficient "know-how". With persistence and tenacity, mastering watercolor became both my passion and my greatest challenge.
Once I acquired the basic techniques of the watercolorist ~ I was ready to investigate how to paint the subject of glass. Fascinated by the abstract shapes and reflected distortions of light passing through objects, I asked myself how would I paint the transparency of glass? How could I find the right balance between pigment and water to reveal the elusive qualities of light? I began to experiment, discovering many possibilities from my research. Little did I know where this remarkable subject would take me.
I am an artist who paints with both the left and right brain, always calculating the next step in my work. My creative right-brain loves to push the color and shapes beyond that of what I see. The mathematical left-brain is always searching for geometric shapes and the Golden Ratio within my subjects.
I love problem solving; looking at a subject and finding a solution on how to get from point A to B quickly, and, how-to break down the process into simple steps so that I can pass on this information to my students. As I paint I am always thinking how to teach each step to my students.
I often wonder if I'm an artist who just happens to be an instructor, or, was my destiny always to teach? I am so fortunate that my path enables me to be both artist and instructor. The process of painting inspires my teaching, and, teaching enlivens my painting
